HMS Endeavour, was a British Royal Navy research vessel that Lieutenant James Cook commanded to Australia and New Zealand on his first voyage of discovery from 1768 to 1771.
The original Endeavour was one of the most recognized exploration ships of its time. Before Cook converted the ship into an exploration vessel, it was a coal carrier named the Earl of Pembroke. Like other carriers, the Earl had a large hold and was thick-hulled, perfect for carrying cargo and treasures for Cook's journey.
Cook's Endeavour voyage increased European knowledge of the South Pacific, New Zealand and Australia. After his historic voyage, Cook embarked on more expeditions and sailed along the coast of Washington and Oregon on his last journey. Other explorers followed, including an 1841 American expedition team, which found and named Gig Harbor.
